TOPIC 5: ISLAM AND SUSTAINABILITY
Assalamualaikum everyone! In this topic, I want to write about Islam and Sustainable Development. I was so excited about this topic because it shows sustainable development from an Islamic Perspective. I think as Muslims, we should take note of these issues and also make sure it is not far from the guidelines that Islam teaches us.
So, the first dimension is People. We are determined to end poverty and hunger, in all their forms and dimensions and to ensure that all human beings can fulfil their potential in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment. The second dimension is Planet. We are determined to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production and other else to support the needs of the present and future generations. The third dimension is Prosperity. We are determined to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature. The fourth dimension is Peace. We are determined to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development. The last dimension is Partnership. We are determined to mobilize the means required to implement this agenda through a revitalised Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
Other than that, there are guidelines and principles of sustainability in Al-Quran.
1. ADL - JUSTICE
2. MIZAN - BALANCE
3. WASAT - MIDDLENESS
4. RAHMAH - MERCY
5. AMANAH - TRUSTWORTHINESS AND CUSTODIANSHIP
6. TAHARAH - SPIRITUAL PURITY AND PHYSICAL CLEANLINESS
7. HAQ - TRUTHFULNESS AND RIGHTS
8. ILM NAFI' - USEFULNESS OF KNOWLEDGE AND SCIENCE
Based on the guidelines and principles, it can lead to our social and environmental life. Both of these are intergenerational equity which means related to Sustainable Development in Islam. Furthermore, these are also related to the redistribution of wealth and a sustainable economy. In economics, there are zakat and Sadaqah, Takaful (Islamic Security), Waqaf (Charitable endowment), Prohibition of Riba' (Interest) and Tarkah (Inheritance). So, basically, the guidelines and principles of sustainability in Al-Quran can be applied in all situations in terms of social, economic and environmental.
In addition, Islam is also concerned with nature because there are strong relationships between nature and humans. We need to take care of everything that Allah gives to us or appreciate it with do good deeds. For example, we take care of our 'Ibadah and leave all the bad things that Allah doesn't like. In Arabic, we can call it Hablum Minallah. It means we take care of our relationship with our God. Besides, we also take care of our relationship with humans such as doing good deeds to our parents, family, friends and others. In Arabic, we call it Hablum Minannas. Next, we did not harm animals or something that Allah created in our environment. In Arabic, we call Hablum Min Ghoirunnas. Lastly, Hablum Minal Alam, This is what I mentioned in the first line about our relationship with nature. Nature gives many benefits to make our life better. Without them, our life could be hardship and we can not survive it.
