TOPIC 6: SPIRITUALLY A MISSING COMPONENT IN SDG

Assalamualaikum everyone! How are you? Hope you are doing well and enjoy reading this. Today, I want to highlight spirituality in Sustainable Development Goals? Do you think that spirituality is also an important thing in SDG? I think this component is very important to us, especially for all Muslims in this world.

In Islam, Spirituality (Al-Ruhiyyah) refers to an unconditional belief in the unity and sovereignty of Allah (SWT).  We can see someone who has the character of these with Islamic Spirituality: all good deeds and economically. Meanwhile, ethically or environmentally for gaining the pleasure of Allah a spiritual person as the Khalifah of Allah (The Vicegerent) of Allah (SWT) is assigned the duty to develop life on earth according to the divine guidance.

What I learned about this topic is a person of spirituality is required to approach natural resources with humility and to work together with fellow human beings for a safe, peaceful and bountiful environment towards establishing a virtuous society and a virtuous civilisation.

Besides, I also learn about Mahboob Husain View based on Quranic Verses on Sustainable Development. The concept of sustainable development was an integral part of the Muslim way of life since the seventh century. This is based on several Quranic verses which serve as guidelines for sustainable development.

However, influenced by the modern West, the Muslim world failed to follow these guidelines and is suffering from the problems created by unsustainable development. There is no place for spirituality and values in the approach to sustainable development by United Nations which has created problems for humanity. The solution is to integrate the spiritual dimensions into a sustainable development strategy. All human endeavours are aimed at gaining "happiness" for oneself. Spiritual principles emphasise that the true nature of humanity is blissful existence. Humanity has lost its connection with its own true nature and spirituality will help to get humanity reconnected with its own inner self. Thus, there is a need to take religious's comprehensive role in shaping human lives and in promoting sustainable development.

Furthermore, spirituality will develop pious and faithful human beings who will promote social and environmental development as they will become aware that sustainable development is required of Muslims as Vicegerent (Khalifah) who are stewards and custodians of the earth, with a mission to build it and establish just social order. Islam considers the spiritual components as determinants that shape physical beings.

Moreover, Maqasid Al-Shariah focuses on the primacy of a set of essential purposes or Daruriyat is crucial to sustainable development. Values or the application of spiritual principles are the missing ingredients in the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

In Conclusion, The United Nation SDG Agenda 2030 are primarily intended for the well-being of human beings. Like Agenda 2030, Maqasid Al-Shariah involves realizing human well-being by enhancing the welfare or benefit of the people on the one hand and preventing harm on the other. Its essential goals constitute safeguarding the faith, life or self, intellect, prosperity, wealth and personal hour or human dignity which are in line with the 5PS of sustainable development: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership.
