TOPIC 8: WHY UNIVERSITIES NEED THE SDGS?
Assalamualaikum everyone! How are you? Before this, my previous blog is about the roles and responsibilities of higher education, right? In this blog, I want to focus on the sustainable development in universities. We learn that sustainable development has many advantages to every aspect of this world, including education. Did you guys ever think that why sustainable development is essential to universities?
Before that, let's learn the benefits of sustainable development. Firstly, it demonstrates the university's impact. Next, it captures the demand for SDG-related education. Besides, it also builds new external and internal partnerships. After that, it accesses new funding streams and adopts a comprehensive and globally accepted definition of a responsible and globally aware university.
Can you imagine what can happen if education is without a soul? Can it achieve the objective of building good character in every student? Thus, it is the reason why universities need the SDGS. The key roles of universities are to provide the knowledge and solutions to underpin the implementation of the SDGs. In addition, universities also provide people with professional and personal skills and capabilities. The main aim of SDGs is to make sure everyone contributes. Meanwhile, universities ensure to equip current and future leaders, decision-makers, teachers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and citizens with the knowledge, skills and motivation to help them achieve the SDGs.
They also embody the SDGS principles through organizational governance, operations, and culture. Furthermore, they are providing cross-sectoral leadership in implementation. Universities as neutral and trusted stakeholders within society.
In conclusion, universities should develop courses in teaching and learning to align with the SDGS theme and implement SD on campus by doing "Walk the Talk." For example, talking about waste recycling, saving energy and so on. It can be part of the student's project in a group or individual so the university can be a living-learning lab for sustainable development.
